Looking after your website after it goes live

A website is not a purchase, it is a thing that needs looking after — quietly, continuously, and almost always at the worst possible moment. We keep sites secure, backed up and online, and there is a person on the end of the phone who can actually do something about it.

1

What €40 to €120 a month actually buys

Software updates applied before they become a security problem. Backups taken automatically and checked, not just assumed. Monitoring that tells us your site is down before your customers do. Certificates renewing themselves. Uptime, broken forms and email delivery being looked at. And every small change you need — a price, a photograph, an opening hour, a new page for the season — handled the day you send it, included rather than invoiced one at a time.

2

The failures we actually see

A certificate that expired on a Sunday. A plugin that has not been updated in two years, which is the single most common reason a small business site gets defaced. A contact form that stopped sending six weeks ago and nobody noticed because the enquiries went to spam. A page with a dead booking link that four hundred people scrolled past. None of these are dramatic, and all of them are cheap to prevent and expensive to find after a customer has found them for you.

3

Cover for August, and for the rest of the year

A lot of coastal businesses close for two weeks in the summer, or spend it in a busy season where nobody has an hour. If something fails while you are shut, that is precisely when a customer in another country decides you are not reliable. Arranged in advance, someone still watches the site, still takes the calls and still makes the changes — with a clear note in the plan of who is covering and how to reach them.

4

Updates that do not quietly move your layout

Half of the damage done to a small business website is self-inflicted, by an update that changed a button, a form or a menu. We take a backup first, apply updates on a schedule rather than in a panic, and look at your key pages afterwards. If a change has moved something, you hear about it before your customers do.

5

How to leave, if you ever want to

The plan is optional and the site is not a hostage. Your content is exportable in a usable format, the domain is registered in your name, hosting is in an account you can access, and the build is documented well enough that another developer could pick it up. We would rather be worth renewing than be the reason you cannot leave.

6

What maintenance is not

It is not new pages of copy, a marketing retainer with a technical name, or a support number that leads to a ticket queue. It also does not cover a redesign, an online shop being built out, or a campaign. Those are quoted separately and agreed in advance, because a plan that quietly absorbs everything is how a small business ends up paying for work it never asked for.

Common questions

Do you look after sites you did not build?
Yes, and a lot of them. We review what is there first — hosting, domain ownership, theme, plugin bloat, backups, security — and tell you honestly whether it is worth maintaining or whether the accumulated problems make a rebuild the cheaper long-term answer.
Can I cancel the care plan?
Any time, with a month's notice, and you keep the site, the domain and the content. There is no lock-in because there is nothing to unlock: nothing about the site stops working if the plan ends.
What is not included?
A redesign, a new online shop, campaigns and advertising, copywriting at volume, photography, and anything that needs a developer rather than an update. We will point those out and quote them separately rather than invoicing you for a surprise.
Do you answer messages in the evening?
Honest answer: we are not a 24-hour service, and pretending otherwise would be worse than saying so. We cover the hours that matter to this market, and where an out-of-hours problem genuinely cannot wait, we have an arrangement for it written into the plan.
Is the domain really mine?
Yes. It is registered in your name or your company's name, and you have the login. That is the first question we would ask another designer, so it is the first thing we do.
What if you cannot fix something?
We tell you what we know, what we do not, and what the options are, and we help you get to whoever can. We would rather say 'this needs the hosting company and here is how' than keep you waiting for an answer we do not have.
